Before joining THR, Coates was a Senior Culture Editor at Esquire, the founding Deputy Editor at Decider and a Deputy Editor at Flavorwire; his writing has also been published in Billboard, Columbia Journalism Review, Slate and Wired. A Virginia native, Coates graduated from James Madison University with a degree in English.
