By the time The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst first debuted in 2015, Robert Durst was arrested on suspicion of the murders of his missing wife and two others — all thanks to filmmaker Andrew Jarecki’s recordings (and surprise audio confession) with the wealthy real estate heir. The documentary’s sequel, The Jinx: Part Two, premieres today on Max with more interviews of witnesses, prosecutors, jurors and others involved in the investigation of Durst.

At the New York premiere Thursday, Jarecki told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think [Durst] is kind of a unicorn because he’s so unusual, because he’s such a powerful personality and also reckless and also willing to be honest about things that most people aren’t honest about, so you feel like you’re seeing inside him…. And beyond that he’s also rich and he’s also from this family, not only a rich family, but also a family that he’s constantly embarrassing. There’s so much to him, and he’s a troublemaker and kind of a firestorm. That draws people in. It’s very seductive. I’m not sure we’re going to find another Bob Durst. A lot of people are going to find fascinating stories in that vein, but I’m not sure I’m ever going to find a story like that.” Speaking later about the premiere episode, Jarecki and executive producer Zac Stuart-Pontier shared with THR a play-by-play breakdown of Durst being apprehended in 2015 ahead of his on-air confession.

Durst was convicted in 2021 and received a life sentence for the murders of his wife, Kathleen McCormack (who disappeared in 1982, and whom Durst was long suspected of killing), and his close friend, Susan Berman (who was killed execution-style in 2000). He was acquitted in the 2001 death of his neighbor, Morris Black. He died in prison in 2022 at the age of 78.
Per Max, “the filmmakers continue their investigation for the next eight years, uncovering hidden material, Durst’s prison calls and interviews with witnesses who had not come forward until now.”
